Our Mission
The Chiaroscuro International Film Series connects diverse cultures and perspectives through thought-provoking international films. We provide our audience with opportunities to engage in meaningful dialogue and foster greater understanding of the human experience through cinema.
About the Film Series
Each year from January to March, Chiaroscuro presents five carefully selected international films, unified by a central theme that highlights diverse cultural perspectives.
Films are shown in their original language with English subtitles. After each screening, a film scholar and a cultural expert lead a thought-provoking panel discussion, offering insights into the film's themes and cultural context. The experience continues with a casual reception featuring complimentary food and drink, creating an inviting space for conversation and connection.
Thanks to our generous local sponsors, all events remain free and open to the public.
Join Us at
Wealthy Theatre
Our screenings take place at the historic Wealthy Theatre in Grand Rapids' Eastown neighborhood. This beautiful venue offers the perfect setting for film lovers to come together and explore new perspectives.
Our History
Founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2005 by local educators and artists, Chiaroscuro has become a cultural cornerstone of West Michigan. Inspired by the Toronto International Film Festival, our volunteer-driven organization has always remained committed to fostering community enrichment through international cinema. Though our venue has evolved over the years, our mission to bridge cultures through film has remained unchanged.
