Using a variety of narrative, cinematic and thematic devices, each film explores the relationship between the past and present. The 2016 Series presents an award-winning roster of five celebrated films from around the world.

Mustang is a 2015 internationally co-produced drama film directed by Turkish-French film director Deniz Gamze Ergüven. The film is set in a remote Turkish village and depicts the lives of five young orphaned sisters and the challenges they face growing up in a conservative society.

Güeros is a 2014 Mexican film directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios. The film showcases three restless teens searching for folk-rocker Epigmenio Cruz on the streets of Mexico City during the student strikes of 1999.

Of Horses and Men

Of Horses and Men (Icelandic: Hross í oss) is a 2013 Icelandic drama film written and directed by Benedikt Erlingsson and produced by fellow director Friðrik Þór Friðriksson. The film was selected as the Icelandic entry for the Best Foreign Language Filmat the 86th Academy Awards. The film won the 2014 Nordic Council Film Prize.

Timbuktu

Timbuktu is a 2014 French-Mauritanian drama film directed by Abderrahmane Sissako. It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

The film looks at the brief occupation of TimbuktuMali by Ansar Dine. Parts of the film were influenced by a 2012 public stoning of an unmarried couple in Aguelhok.  It was shot in Oualata, a town in south-east Mauritania.

About Elly (Persian: درباره الی‎‎, translit. Darbareye Elly) is a 2009 Iranian psychological drama film directed by Asghar Farhadi. It is the fourth film by Farhadi. The film is about the relationships between some middle class families in Iran. Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival.
